Joining Collaborate sessions on a mobile device
Dowloading the app into your device
In order to be able to join a Collaborate session, you need to have the free Blackboard App installed on your device. The app is downloadable on Google Play and the App Store by searching for "Blackboard". The app has a pen icon on blue background. Download the app.
How does the app NOT work?
Curiously enough, the app doesn't work by just clicking on the icon and joining a session directly with the room address or institution name. Do not open the app and try to write anything on the log in page. It won't do anything.
So how DOES it work?
1. Open a browser and go to moodle.diak.fi. Log into Moodle. Search for the course area where you're supposed to have the online session. Alternatively, you may tap on the quick link available on your My Courses-page. It'll take you directly into the Collaborate activity on a given course.
2. Tap Join session as you would on a laptop computer.
3. Your device most likely opens up a black screen with a purple rolling wheel while it's trying to search for a proper app.
4. Now your device probably asks you whether or not you want to open the session in the BlackBoard App. Open it in the app. If you haven't downloaded the app onto your device, it won't give you any suggestions. There might be a note that you do not have the proper app to open the link.
5. At least the Chrome browser will ask for another confirmation. Depending on your device, tap OK/Allow/Open/Accept or whatever it is that the pop up window offers for the choice of approval. If your device asks for microphone or camera permissions, you do wisely if you allow them as well at this point. Normally these rights are asked only after you tap on the microphone/camera icons in the Collaborate session.
6. The yellow circle will turn while your device is connecting to the session.
7. You are connected once you'll see the black screen with the Collaborate icons. Success!
Remember that with a mobile device you'll need a reasonably solid wifi connection to be able to follow the online lectures without interruption. If you have connectivity issues, change into a fixed broadband connection and a laptop rather than trying to connect and re-connect with a poor connection.
