Viewing and grading submissions (the MoodleRooms grading view)

In MoodleRooms, assignments can be graded in two ways. It depends on the activity type used if it is possible to use both of the following or only the latter.

A. Grading within the activity

B. Grading in the gradebook

This guide focuses on the first method.

The process of viewing any assignment, quiz or any other kind of activity type is quite similar. The process of grading is a bit different, depending on the acticity type used. There are two examples with images below (assignment and quiz).

Viewing submissions in assignments

1. On a course area, teachers may see the submissions link below the activity, notifying how many submissions there are at the moment.

2. You may enter the submissions list view by clicking on the link.

3. In the grading list view, you may sort the submissions according to your liking. Please note that by default, Moodle sorts the submissions according to the latest modifications - this means that the last submissions will appear on top, and the first ones on the bottom of the list. You may use any of the columns to sort the submissions, just by clicking on the column title. The little triangle next to the column heading will indicate which sorting filter you have on currently (in the image below see the circled spot).

You may also look for individual students by using the alphabets (marked with red in the image).

For teachers who have lots of submissions to grade, it may be useful to learn to sort the submissions with the Status column. That sorts out already graded first, to be graded next and finally in the bottom you will see the students with no submissions.

The grading list view may be modified. Teachers may hide or unhide some columns by clicking the plus/minus icons. Also, if you scroll down to the bottom of the list view, you may change the default number of submissions on a page or you may filter the submissions by status (submitted, not submitted, requires grading and so on, see the image below). Learn how to use these filters the most effectively. Before sending a support ticket asking why you cannot see some submissions, check these settings in the list view!

If your screen is small, you may try to zoom in and out to adjust the grading list view (hold down the Ctrl-button and press plus to zoom in or minus (dash) to zoom out.

Grading assignment submissions

In the grading list view, choose the student whose submission you are about to grade and click on the Grade button (see image below).

You are now seeing the annotation view in the MoodleRooms grader (in the image below).

The red arrow: you may filter the submissions and move onto the next submission in the upper right hand corner tools.

The yellow arrow: you may read the student's full paper and turn pages with the tools on the upper left hand corner.

The green arrow: you can click the document link to open it up in Microsoft Word (for example, if you want to use the Word comment tool for making comments on the paper).

The blue arrow: you may change the grading view (for example to make the left hand side column bigger).

Grading is done as follows (see the image below):

  1. Choose the grade from the drop down menu, or if you are using points as in this example, give the points in the box.

If the grade type here is incorrect, change it in the assignment settings before saving any changes! Once you have graded one student, you won't be able to change the grade type.

2. Write your feedback in the Feedback comments box. Do not use the Comments tool for your feedback! If this box is not visible, please go to the assignment settings and turn it on first (see the instructions). Any text that you write here, will be visible to the student in the gradebook as well as in connection with the assignment on the course area.

3. Remember to Save changes (in the bottom). If you tick the box "notify students", the students will get a notification either in Moodle or via email (or both).

4. If you want to upload a comment file, the tools for uploading are found below the feedback box (if turned on in the assignment settings).

5. Use the upper right hand corner navigating arrows to switch on to the next submission to continue grading.

The comment tool (outlined with yellow) is meant only for short comments concerning the submission process. The comment tool may be used by both the student and the teacher to communicate about the framework of the submission. When you have finished grading and saved all changes for every student, you may close the grading view by returning to the course area using the upper left hand side links. The grades are now saved in the system.

Viewing submissions in quizzes

1. Locate the quiz on the course area. Click on the links notifying the number of attempts. When the activity is open, click on the link Attempts.

Take a moment to familiarize with the submission list view and its filters.

1. If the quiz is in group mode, you may filter the submissions of students belonging to a particular group.

2. In the drop down menu, you may choose to include all students or only enrolled students in the report. You may also filter the students who have not attempted, if necessary.

3. Often it is useful to filter the quiz attempts according to their status. For example if a student claims they have done the quiz, but it is not visible in the list view, try filtering with Attempts that are in progress. Depending on the quiz settings, the problem may be that the student has not clicked on Save all and finish at the end of quiz which means that their quiz is left with a status "in progress". Note that as a teacher you are not able to manually grade these attempts! The student has to finish the attempt first.

4. In the display options you may choose how many students/attempts are listed on a page.

You may also filter attempts by the students' names.

To see the attempts listed, scroll down a bit. The table of attempts is visible below the filter menu.

Since quizzes only use points as a grading type, quizzes often include question types with automatic point calculations. This is why the grading list view in the quiz activity does not have a Grade button similar to the assignment grading view. However, essay questions are the only question type where automatic assessment is not possible. Essay questions must be graded manually by allocating points for each answer. You may view the essay answers in a variety of ways:

A. To see all answers to all questions by a single student, click on the link Review attempt below the student's name.

B. To review and grade a single answer to a particular question by a particular student, click the link of a single question with each student row.

C. To grade all answers to a particular essay question by ALL students, click on the admin wheel and choose Manual grading.

Grading quiz submissions (essay questions)

Choose the view of grading (A, B or C as described above).

A: Reviewing the whole quiz attempt by a single student.

Click on Review attempt. Then choose the essay question and read the student's answer (dotted with yellow in the image). Below the answer click on the link Make comment or override mark.

The editing view opens up in a pop up window. Write your feedback in the text editor box, then allocate the points and finally click on Save. The pop up window closes.

Scroll down and repeat the assessment with each question. When you are done grading or regrading the automatic points, scroll all the way down and click Finish review. You may now choose another student for reviewing.

B. Reviewing a single question by a single student.

Choose the student and the question you are planning to grade. Open up the answer using the question link. The same instructions apply as with above.

C. Grading answers to one question by all students.

Click on the admin wheel and choose Manual grading. By default you will only see the questions requiring manual grading.

If you click on "Also show questions that have been graded automatically" you will see all the questions included in the quiz. This is not necessary unless you plan to grade all the automated question types manually as well.

You may click either the link in the column To grade or the link in the column Total. Both links let you view all the students' answers in a scrollable pop up window. Grade the answers as instructed above with option A.

To save all the feedback and points given, scroll down and click on Save and go to next page.

When you are finished, scroll back up and click on Back to the list of questions.
