Private messages in Moodle

Each user needs to define the settings for message delivery - it depends on the user whether they direct Moodle messages into their personal email or whether the messages are displayed only when logged into Moodle. If a user has not directed the Moodle messages to a personal email, they need to log in to Moodle to be able to receive and read the messages. Do not assume that other users will read your messages (at least without delay). It is recommended to use the forums instead of messages for important questions.

Messages are allowed by default between all users, but they are private and no group messages can be sent (there are some exceptions for teachers). You may also block another user, which prevents the blocked person from sending you a message.

The message main view is found on the My courses page, under the title Messages on the right hand side menu. Click on View my messages. The newest messages will appear on this page as quick links.

In the message page you may search for other students and teachers by typing in firstname lastname. When you find the right person, activate the name by clicking. Then you may write the message in the narrow text box and when you are ready click on Send.

The receiver will get a push notification of your message in Moodle (as in the image below).

By clicking on the little push ball, the My course page opens up and the user may read the messages from the quick links of the right hand side menu. All new messages will have the text "unread" next to the time stamp.

By clicking on the quick link of the received message you may enter the messages page and are able to write a response, delete the message or read other new messages.
