Recommended notification settings

From a student's perspective, the most important notification settings are the following:

  • assignment notifications
  • feedback notifications
  • forum notifications & Moodlerooms forum notifications
  • general notifications (MoodleRooms, Inc.)
  • inbound message configurations

Assignment notifications

It's possible to get a notification every time you submit an assignment, send it to evaluation, edit or delete it. It may be useful to turn on alert badge notification for these, just to make sure your submissions are saved. They are the most handy with group submissions - you will be notified when somebody from your group submits the assignment for evaluation.  If you on the other hand know where and how to check the status of your submissions, do not turn these notifications on. This applies especially to email notifications, since there will be plenty of them.

Feedback notifications

Feedback notifications announce the written feedback given by teachers in assignment submissions and some other activities. We suggest you turn on the notifications, but choose if it is more useful to have them as web notifications (clicking the notification will take you to the My courses page where you can access the activity directly) or as alert badge notifications (clicking the notification will take you into the respective course area). Both notification types are not necessary to be on.  You may also try turning on email notifications for feedback: you will receive an email notifying you of the feedback available, but you have to log in to Moodle to be able to read it.

All the grading done and feedback given by teachers will appear as quick links on the My courses page without turning any notifications on. If you use the My courses page frequently, do not turn on the feedback notifications.

Feedback reminders are useless, do not turn them on.

Forum notifications

Forum notifications apply to any forum posts or replies within the so called old forum activity tool. Also the news forum of the Diak Moodle front page uses the old forum type which is why the selection is locked in Subscribed forum posts (and you may not alter it). However, the notifications sent by the forums on any of your course areas can be adjusted. As a rule the forum digest notifications are good (you may turn the email notifications on) and the single forum posts are handy as web notifications or alert badge notifications online or offline.  Remember, the email notifications for forum digests are sent daily, so if they annoy you and/or you do not want to have double emails for each forum summary, do not turn on the email notifications.

NB! This is not the place where you subscribe to any of the course area forums. To subscribe to a forum, go to that forum or alternatively adjust the general forum subscription settings in your profile preferences (see separate instructions).

Forum posts can be accesses via the My courses page as well as quick links, but note that only the 10 most recent posts collected from all of your course areas are visible there.

MoodleRooms- forum notifications

MoodleRooms forums are the new types of forum activities. You'll recognize them by the preview window available on the course area (you are able to see 6 of the newest posts there). Moodlerooms forums are perhaps used a bit more often than the original forum type.

The same recommendations apply to both the old forum and MoodleRooms forum notifictaions.

Lesson notifications

Ignore these notifications and turn them off. Even if you had turned them on, Moodle does not send you any notification of the feedback given in a lesson tool essay question. Teachers may send their assessment and feedback via email by using the sent to students-button in Moodle, but normally teachers do not assess the individual essay type questions within a lesson tool separately. They may only grade the lesson passed/fail. Moreover, you may check the overall grade and feedback of a lesson by checking the course gradebook. Alternatively the feedback is accessed on the course area, using the feedback available link below the activity.

NB! An essay question and feedback within the lesson activity is not the same thing as an essay question in the quiz activity.

Recommended notification settings are below.

Questionnaire notifications

Questionnaire activity is virtually not used in Diak Moodle. You don't need to turn on the notifications for questionnaires.

System notifications

System notifications are displayed when badges are awarded or learning plans are commented. Neither of these are really used in Diak Moodle, so do not turn these notifications on.

Manual & self enrolments notifications

These notifications are mostly useful to teachers. Only if a teacher has for some reason set an end date for course self-enrolment, it may be nice to have a notification announcing the end of enrolment.  The enrolment end dates are set for only a few course offered for people outside Diak.

Diak students do not need to turn these notifications on.

Grade range notifications

Grade range notifications communicate any changes to grading scales in assignments and other activities. These changes are made by teachers, but are not necessary from a student's perspective. If you allow these notifications, you will get a push notification whenever a teacher changes the grade range, for example maximum points or activates a pass/fail scale.

General notifications (MoodleRooms Inc)

The mystical Moodlerooms Inc. defines some notification settings for activities. These may be turned on according to your own preferences.

Activity updated or added: turn these notifications on (web or alert badge) if you want to be notified of any changes made into an activity or material available in Moodle courses.

Turn the email notifications on only if you don't  log in to Moodle regularly at least on a weekly basis. There may be plenty of notifications, since they are sent every time something is changed on a course area.

Activity completed: a notification is sent every time you mark an activity completed or when Moodle does it automatically for you based on the rules defined in activities. These notifications are not useful and can be rather annoying, so do not turn them on.

Activity graded: Turn these on with consideration. Even email notifications while offline might be ok, if you want to be notified of the assignment and quiz evaluation done by teachers. The feedback and grade will always appear in your My courses page as quick links.

Course grade changed: Virtually none of the teachers mark the overall course grades, so these notifications are useless. You must check your course grades in MyDiak.

Glossary entry changed: Turn these on only if some of the course areas use the Glossary activity and if it is important for you to know about any changes made.

Comments: Comments appear in many activities (assignment, quiz, photo gallery etc). Turn the notifications on if you like, but it is only allowed to have them as web or alert badge notifications (which is quite enough for students). NB! Comments are not forum posts or instant messages!

Data privacy notifications

Data privacy notifications are connected to the privacy requests done by you in Moodle. It is a rather new feature in Moodle and has not been tested much. Basically if you make a data request via your profile, the system sends you notification every time the request is processed. However, there is a specific procedure for requesting personal data, and it should not be done using the Moodle data request tool. Do not turn these notifications on.

Inbound message configurations

Inbound message configurations notify of the messages received via the instant message tool in Moodle. The notifications concern the processing of these messages and are not usually important. All received messages will generate a push notification anyway.

Event monitoring notifications

Event monitoring rules are not much used in Diak Moodle. Unless you create your own monitoring rules you do not need to turn these on. These notifications just send you a confirmation when you have subscribed to an event monitoring rule.
