Notification settings

Go to My courses page and click on Preferences (below your name).

In the first column, choose Notification preferences.

The link opens up a table view where you can set the notifications (amount and channels) send by the various Moodle activities.

Web notifications

Web notifications (column 1) are the little numbered balls appearing next to you avatar image in the upper right hand corner.

Email notifications

Column 2 (email) defines for which actions notifications are sent into your email. If you find these messages annoying, put them all off. We recommend, however, some email notifications to be turned on (see the recommendations).

By default the email notifications will be sent to the email address set in your user profile. Usually with Diak staff and students this is the Diak email address. You may choose to direct the email notifications into an alternative email address by clicking on the title link in column 2 (marked with yellow in the image below).

Directing email notifications to an alternative email address

Click on the email link. In the pop up window type in the email you wish to use for notifications (for example gmail). Then Save changes.

Alert badge notification

Alert badge is the small alarm bell icon in the upper right hand corner. These are push notifications and the number indicates how many notifications are unread.

How to adjust the notifications?

Each of the three notification columns have two choices: online and offline. By clicking/tapping you may change the colour: red is off and green is on. As a rule, you do not need to have any notifications on while you are working online in Moodle, since most of the important actions will appear as quick links on the My courses page. However, notifications may be useful if you are working in Moodle and having a message conversation with your peer. Thus you will get a notification of an inbound message in real time. Also confirmations of a submitted assignment may be useful if you want to make sure your submission was successful. Just remember that all messages, forum posts and feedback will be available in the My courses page as quick links.

With column 2 (email notification), consider what notifications you want to receive when you are offline. The following choices may result in a lot of messages flooding your inbox:

  • activity updated or added
  • activity completed
  • activity graded

When these email notifications are on, every time a teacher adds something in the course area or even updates some minor spelling mistakes, Moodle will sent you an email. If you want to have notifications of these actions, consider alert badge notifications.

If you are unsure of which notifications should be turned on and which off, please read our recommendations.
